Chantix® and Diabetes
Since Chantix® was first launched in the U.S., there have been over XXX reports of diabetes, insulin resistance or glucose intolerance associated with the use of Chantix®.  These reports are included in the Adverse Event Reporting System (AERS) maintained by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”). Whether or not there a clear associatiexists and, if so, the strength, character and severity of such an association cannot be determined from the AERS data. However, most knowledgeable observers agree that there is considerable underreporting (perhaps as few as 1 in 20 events are actually reported to the FDA) of adverse events. Moreover, the incidence of diabetes among people who use Chantix® (i.e. how many Chantix® users are likely to develop diabetes) is currently unknown.

Smoking and Diabetes
Many epidemiological studies suggest that smokers are at greater risk for developing diabetes than people who have never smoked. A recent study published in the medical journal Diabetes Care concludes that smokers have double the risk of developing diabetes than people who never smoked. Moreover, the authors of the study also concluded that “…former smokers did not have a significantly increased risk of diabetes compared with never smokers, suggesting that this risk factor [smoking] is modifiable.” Smoking and Incidence of Diabetes Among U.S. Adults, Foy et. Al., Diabetes Care Vol. 28, No. 10, October 2005.

There is no published study comparing the risk of developing diabetes in smokers to people who are undergoing smoking cessation therapy using Chantix®. However, the number of adverse events reported to the FDA associating diabetes or glucose intolerance with the use of Chantix®, when compared to other drugs, suggests the existence of an association. The strength, character or severity of such an association, if it indeed exists, cannot be determined in the absence of well-controlled clinical trial measuring the incidence of diabetes among Chantix® users as compared to non-users.
